Lee J. Ames was an American artist, art instructor, and author. He was born on January 8, 1921, in Manhattan, New York. He studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and later served in the US Army during World War II.
Ames became famous for his "Draw 50" series of books, which teach readers how to draw various objects, animals, and other subjects in a step-by-step manner. He sought to demystify the artistic process and make drawing accessible to people of all ages and skill levels.
During his career, Ames worked as an illustrator for various magazines and companies, including Sports Illustrated, Reader's Digest, and IBM. He also taught art at several schools and organizations, including the School of Visual Arts and the Ringling College of Art and Design.
